National Rechargeable Battery Testing Centre (NRBTC): The Power of Safety- Why Battery Testing Matters

The rechargeable battery powers modern technologies that drive nearly every aspect of our modern lifestyle, from smartphones and laptops to electric vehicles (EVs) and renewable energy storage systems. Lithium-ion batteries have become the gold standard due to their high energy density, efficiency, and long cycle life. However, the bigger the battery is built with increased energy density, the higher the stakes and risks. A malfunctioning battery is no small matter as it can lead to catastrophic outcomes like fires, explosions, or environmental harm. Battery testing is essential to evaluate the battery’s performance, reliability, and safety under various real-life and abuse conditions to identify problems before they become disasters.

Malaysia is transitioning towards a green economy and actively promotes EVs and renewable energy. In line with this, Malaysia is currently establishing a state-of-the-art battery testing centre known as the National Rechargeable Battery Testing Centre (NRBTC), with facilities for electrical, mechanical, and thermal testing to address battery safety and performance matters. The main roles and responsibilities of NRBTC are;

  1. To provide impartial, third-party testing, verification and validation for rechargeable batteries based on international standard requirements for market acceptance.
  2. To develop national battery standard and compliance guidelines for regulatory bodies
  3. To establish guidelines and evaluate re-purposed battery performance for second-life applications and for recycling purposes.

NRBTC would like to collaborate with international bodies to enhance its battery testing capabilities through;

  1. Technical Knowledge Transfer and Capacity Building
  2. Regulatory Framework Alignment
  3. Research and Development
